Chapter 8

In this chapter Bod begins to not be able to see the ghosts and it gets worse and worse as the chapter progresses. Earlier on we discussed in class that we believed the reason for Bod being able to see the ghosts was because his mind was more open to believe things that other, older people would reject. That is why they saw them. because they had no reason not to believe in them. So, he ends up growing up in the graveyard, being raised by ghosts. Seeing them and believing in them every day of his life.

So why does he all of a sudden stop seeing them even though he believes in them, and even though he knows they are there?

I loved that the author ends this book with some exiting action. It made me want to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I liked that Bod used his cleverness to trap the man in the hole, and send the others into the Ghoul-gate, then using the SLEER to save himself from the last Jack. I like that you finally get to understand a little bit about what the SLEER looks like, but I wonder where it took Jack Frost, I'd guess into the hill itself. Does that mean he dies or he is in some sort of state where he cannot, because the SLEER says:

WE WILL PROTECT HIM UNTIL THE END OF TIME. THE SLLER WILL HOLD HIM IN ITS COILS FOREVER...

What will become of Jack Frost deep inside the hill of the graveyard?

Chapter 7 to Pg.249

There is one thing that confuses me in this novel. I find it odd that Jack Frost is befriending Scarlett right from the beginning. Right when she walks into the graveyard he is already offering her rides and being super nice to her. Does he know that she is connected to Bod? OR does it just so happen to work out? OR does he influence her into finding it?

Interlude - Chapter 6

I liked this chapter a lot. So, Bod is now around 12. I was surprised at the way Bod acted around the bullies considering he has had close to zero human interaction. He had no problem standing up to them, if I were Silas I would have given him a pat on the head for it. It is great that there are 12 year old bullies that will steal your lunch money and make you steal things and then threaten you with it. I always thought they were older. Kids these days.

I know that Liza went to tell Silas that Bod was in trouble but i was wondering how. I thought that she wasn't allowed on consecrated ground and if i'm not mistaken, that is where the chapel where Silas is. How did she get him?

Chapter 5

Danse Macabre

A bit of an odd chapter. I feel like it was randomly put in there. But, you could definitely read it by itself and it wouldn't confuse you to death. Anyway...

I find it funny that no one will talk about it before or after it happens. It's funny how when Bod asks about it people act like they don't know what happened or what he is talking about. He gets so frustrated - it makes me laugh. One other thing, the people cutting the flowers say that it hasn't happened in eighty years. I know some people could be alive still but most of that town's residents don't remember that. So why do they jump into the dance like they have been doing their whole lives? I know I would be a little apprehensive about dancing with a ghost.

Chapter 4

Silas is really getting on my nerves. What is he?!?!?! It says in the beginning of the book and even on the cover flap that he is a "guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead."

• Okay, so he is not a human like Bod. But, he has Freedom of the Graveyard like Bod. And, he can leave the graveyard.
  

Is he a zombie - half dead half not.

• He disappears in a poof of velvet and appears about the same way.
  

Is he a magician - pulling some Siegfried & Roy.

• It is once mentioned that he crawls down from the top of the chapel after he sleeps and he only eats one thing.

Is he a vampire - his only food blood.

Chapter 2 - Chapter 3

What a creative imagination this guy has! This guy meaning Neil Gaimen. There is some weird stuff going on in this book. Ghulheim, for instance. Well I found out that heim is German for "home" and the Ghul i'm guessing is for ghoul. So the name explains itself. It sounds like Bod's experiences were inspired by Alice in Wonderland but it turns out when he gets to the bottom of the hole his experience will be much different. When he ends up there and the sky is described as red you already know that he is going to use his Night-Gaunt call in some way to save himself, so there is no real suspense, i mean the book isn't over yet so you know he is going to get out of it in some way.


And how does he get out?


Something we talked about is class the other day, Deus Ex Machina. All of a sudden the Night - Gaunt swoops down and saves him, but before that instace it seems that, altough they heard him calling for help ealier, they didn't get why he was calling for help.I wasn't too surprised by the ending but for once i wish Bod could have gotten himself out of his predicament himself.

Did anyone else think the same thing?

Chapter 1

Speaking of little kids always being the only ones to see the ghosts...

It seems like that is the way movies always go.

For example there is A Haunting in Connecticut, The Messengers, The Sixth Sense, and The Others.

Some people believe that they are more perceptive to the paranormal while others think that the ghosts will reveal themselves only to the children by choice. Others think that there are special children called Indigo Children or Crystal Children that are not of this world that can see ghosts. I think these people are crazy. I mean really, alien babies, really?
